Controversial ATV Video Sparks Outrage In Montana

Well, this is one way to get people to hate you.

A video is making the rounds on social media that shows an ATV driving in the water of the Blackfoot River.

Vehicle Caught Driving Full Stretch of Blackfoot River

Outdoor enthusiasts and Montana locals in general were horrified when a video started making the rounds on Monday of a SHERP all-terrain vehicle driving the whole 8.5-mile stretch of river from the North Fork confluence down to the Scotty Brown Bridge.

Kathy Shoendoerfer, who co-owns the Blackfoot Angler fly shop in Ovando, told the Missoulian, "I've got people storming in here and going, 'What the hell?'"

Montana FWP Responds to Blackfoot River Incident

The big fear is people will see this online and then believe they too can drive their ATVs and other vehicles in the water, which is not true according to Montana Fish, Wildlife, & Parks.

The FWP put out a statement regarding the video and vehicle in the water:

"Actions like these seen in the video can have a negative impact on habitat and the fishery of the Blackfoot River, both of which are already experiencing difficult conditions this summer," the FWP statement continued. "Simply put, operating a motor vehicle impacting Montana's stream bed should not happen without a permit, whether it’s along the Blackfoot or any stream across the state."

In another statement released to media on Tuesday, Region 2 spokesperson Vivica Crowser did say the video was real and was verified to be a "weed control coordinator contracted by Powell County."
