Bipartisan Agreement In Washington On SNAP Reform

It’s not often you see folks in Washington, D.C. working together, but right now there’s a bit of bipartisan agreement happening around the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, better known as SNAP.

At the center of it all is something as simple as rotisserie chicken. And you might be wondering, what’s the big deal with chicken?

The Proposed “Hot Rotisserie Chicken Act”

Well, under current SNAP rules, people receiving benefits can’t buy hot prepared food, which means rotisserie chicken is off-limits.

That’s why a bipartisan group of lawmakers is now pushing to change that rule with what they’re calling the “Hot Rotisserie Chicken Act.”

The idea is pretty straightforward: let SNAP recipients use their benefits to buy hot rotisserie chicken at grocery stores. But it’s part of a bigger conversation too, about what should and shouldn’t be allowed under SNAP.

Bigger Conversations About SNAP Food Choices

The new Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has been vocal about removing items like candy, soda, and other junk foods from what can be purchased with SNAP benefits. That’s a stance also supported by Montana Governor Greg Gianforte.

Regarding allowing people to purchase a prepared chicken, Jim Justice, a Republican senator from West Virginia, put it this way:

“We have to give people the option to put a healthy, protein-dense choice on the table that actually tastes good and doesn’t take an hour and a half to cook.”
