A Popular Folklore That Might Actually Be True In Montana

There's a very popular folklore among farmers and ranchers across the nation, and right here in Montana, it states that precipitation follows fog by 90 days.

At first glance, this might sound a little far-fetched, but you'd be amazed how many people swear by this theory.

So the million-dollar question is, is this theory actually correct?

Unfortunately, like most weather research, there's no black-and-white answer to the question of whether precipitation follows fog by 90 days.

What Is 90-Day Fog?

Interestingly enough, nobody really knows where this theory even came from or where it originated.

But among the agricultural community, the theory of 90-day fog is very much alive and well!

However, there is some discrepancy with this theory.

Some folks believe precipitation happens more like 60 days after fog instead of 90, while others believe precipitation happens exactly on the 90-day mark.

But one thing is for sure: More often than not, farmers and ranchers have fog notated on their calendars and expect precipitation around that 90-day mark.

Fog In Montana

On August 5, 2024, Great Falls, Montana, was blanketed with fog.

So I decided, why don't we do our own experiment?

If I'm doing the math correctly, November 3rd would be roughly 90 days from August 5th.

In other words, some sort of significant precipitation should impact the Great Falls region near that date.

We'll revisit this topic around that date and see if the legend reigns is true.
