The 2024 hunting season is well underway here in the Treasure State.

As you head out into the backcountry this year, there's a strong possibility you'll hear some peculiar language floating around camp.

That my friend is hunting slang, a language all its own.

Here's some hunting slang you need to familiarize yourself with to be accepted as a real hunter!

  • Speed Goat: This term refers to pronghorn antelope. Fun fact: Antelope are not part of the goat family.
  • Bagged One: Hurray, you managed to get something on your hunting trip!
  • Dandy: All right, so you bagged a big one, and all you'll be doing is bragging to your friends for the following year. Well, that, my friend, is referred to as a dandy!
  • Mulies and Whiteys: If you're not familiar with big game here in Montana, this term might be a bit elusive. All it's referring to is Mule deer and Whitetail deer. It's as simple as that.
  • Skunked: There is no shortage of skunks here in Montana. But that's not at all what this term refers to. Ultimately, it means that you ended your hunt without getting anything. Total buzz kill!
  • Dirt Nap: You shot and killed something... The end! lol
  • Buck Fever: We've all had it. It's that rush of adrenaline that causes shaky knees and a racing heart as soon as you get that massive buck in your crosshairs for the first time.
  • The Rut: This is like an episode of The Bachelor or Bachelorette. The males and females are ready to mingle!
  • Tagged Out: I haven't heard this term as much in Montana, but ultimately, it means you're out of tags. You've filled all of them and had an epic year!
