This Montana winter has been pretty mild to say the least. With that said, we're still early in the new year and as we all know, the weather will change sooner than later and we'll be in the thick of cold weather once more.

That might sound bleak to some, especially for those who are fans of warm weather activities, but there is hope on the horizon and something to look forward to.

Floating The River In Montana

If you've never had a chance to go floating down a river with your friends, you're missing out. It's a fun way to relax, enjoy company with friends, and of course, enjoy the water and surrounding scenery.

For people who are hoping to get a chance to float the Smith River, the time has arrived to get applications in for a floating permit.

"Applications for a permit to float the Smith River will be available beginning on Thursday, Jan. 1 through Sunday, Feb. 15," Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks Region 4 said in a post.

"The drawing for float permits will tentatively be held on Wednesday, Feb. 18."

How Many People Does A Smith River Float Permit Cover?

According to Montana FWP Region 4, "parties up to 15 people can float with one permit." Applicants must be at least 12 years old to apply and there is no age restriction to participate in a float.

For a nonrefundable $15 fee, you can apply for a permit HERE. If you're one of the lucky individuals to get their name drawn, you will be contacted via email after the drawing is conducted on February 18th.
