Creating Windows in Montana That Birds Will Hate
There are certain sounds that for me, are instantly recognizable. Living on a busy intersection street, the sound of crunching metal from an accident is one of those.
Fortunately, that isn't very often. But another sound that occurs quite frequently at my home is that of a distinct thud against one of the many huge windows that we have in our home. I think I might cringe more when I hear it than I do when metal meets metal.
Staggering Number of Birds Hits Windows Each Year
According to the Audubon Society, the number of birds that collide with residential or commercial building windows is astounding. It is estimated that between 350 million to 1 billion birds are killed annually by collisions with buildings.

As we enter into the fall season in Montana, many birds will start their migrations, which could mean more collisions. There are ways to help our feathered friends out there with just a little alteration to those panes of glass.
Tips to Help Birds in Montana Not Hit Our Clean Glass Windows
The Audubon Society has several tips that can help with alleviating the problem of birds flying into our windows. Dressing up those windows so they aren't quite the threat can be done several different ways.

- Patterns can be added to your windows, inside or out to break up the clearness of the glass
- Tempera paint can be easily applied and is easily removed using vinegar and water
- Paracord pieces spaced less than 4 inches apart, hanging outside from the top of the window. The paracord creates a visual barrier for birds.
- Tape, decals or ornamental coverings on windows
- Ultra-violet or channel glass creates a break-up of the window to birds but not the human eye
