5 Pet Peeves at Local Courses That Need to Stop Now

I love golf.  I wish I would have found the passion for it much sooner than I did in my 30's.  And any chance I have to get out on the course is time well spent.  Or at least for me, though my wife may have a different opinion regarding the matter of time spent on the links.

But for as much as I love the game and being on the course, there are certain faux paus that seem to be rearing their ugly head much more often than in past years.  We need to shame these folks.

These Aren't the Normal Complaints on Your Local Course

Most of the time, normal etiquette is what seems to be the most abused.  Slow play, hitting into someone or not fixing ball marks on the green.  All simple stuff, and pretty well known on the course even if you are new to the game.

As I made my way across one of our local courses, there were several things that stood out as things that have become worse in recent years.  So, let's dive in and find out what those 5 things are that are driving me nuts recently.

My 5 Things - Nobody Wants to Have to Touch This Stuff, Ever

Alright, what are those five things keeping me up at night?  Pretty simple stuff to remedy from my perspective.

  1. Cigarette butts on the course.  Stop throwing them willy-nilly out the cart.  Use a can of that beer that you downed on the last hole to put them into.
  2. Chewing gum.  Kudos for using nicotine gum but put it in the trash can.  Trying to dig someone's chewed up Big Red from cleats isn't something fun or sanitary.
  3. Cigar ash.  Stop leaving ash piles on the greens.  Leave the stogie in the cart while putting please.
  4. Trash.  There are garbage cans at every single hole on the courses.  That is 18 times you could have tossed it away.  I'm not your maid, nor are the club house managers.

The final one for me?  It's a big one.  Sunflower seeds.  Spitting these nasty remnants of a plant everywhere on the green needs to stop.  The same can be said for those that are dippers.  Stop throwing that stuff on the green, or anywhere that people are going to be.  It's nasty.
