When you buy a pickup truck, especially when you live in Montana, it is probably going to be used to either haul something or tow something.  Or, and this is probably more likely, it does both.

Unfortunately, if you bought a Ford Motor Company pickup truck as far back as 2020, it could be part of the nearly 4.5 million vehicles now under recall for faulty equipment that directly relates to towing that horse trailer or family camper.  Or even your golf cart.

If the module loses communication with the vehicle while a trailer is being used, it could cause the "loss of stop lamps and turn signal indicators for both High and Low series ITRMs".  But even scarier is the possibility of " the loss of trailer brake function for High series only" according to the recall report.

Effected Vehicles and What to Do If You Have One in Montana

There are several different models of vehicles that owners are being alerted to that may have the faulty ITRM.  Those models include the following:

  • 2022-2026 FORD F-250 SD
  • 2026-2026 FORD E-TRANSIT
  • 2022-2026 LINCOLN NAVIGATOR
  • 2022-2026 FORD EXPEDITION
  • 2022-2026 FORD MAVERICK
  • 2024-2026 FORD RANGER
  • 2021-2026 FORD F-150

Customers will see a warning on their instrument panel cluster offering the following prompt:  "Trailer brake module fault," and the turn signal telltale will fast flash. Additionally, a "Blind Spot Assist System fault" message may appear on the panel.

Ford is expected to roll out a "hot fix" for the software in May of this year.  The recall also states that "owners will have the option to take their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to complete the software update. There will be no charge for this service."  You can read the full recall here.
