How To - Counting Feathers at Giant Springs State Park

No matter where you live, work or play in Montana, you are sure to have the song of some sort of bird keeping you company.  It may be the state bird, the Meadowlark, or even a flock of geese flying in a familiar "V" shape through the sky and honking.

Keeping track of those birds that make their home in Montana is part of what the Upper Missouri Breaks Audobon Society.  Coming up in December in central Montana, the society will be hositng an annual bird counting event.

Upper Missouri Breaks Audobon Society History in Central Montana

Located in central Montana, Upper Missouri Breaks Audubon was started in 1980 as a chapter of National Audubon.  The society is an all-volunteer organization that is open to all.

The UMBA participates in community events including a spot in Nature’s Den at the State Fair in Great Falls each year, and are affiliated with Montana Audubon, which sponsors an annual Montana Bird Festival, conservation efforts, research, education and advocacy in the state.

Join in the Fun Coming in December in Great Falls

The society will be hosting the 125th Annual Christmas Bird Count at Giant Springs State Park on December 14th, 2024.  The event will begin at 8am in the park at the Giant Spring Ranger Station.

You will be able to join the UMBAS as they develop the annual census at the park.  Individuals will also have the opportunity for:

  • Bird ID Basics
  • Counting
  • Recording
