
Yellowstone Leads, But This County is Catching Up Quickly
Medical and recreational sales of marijuana in Montana continue to see slight increases each year since becoming legal in 2022 for public consumption. So much so that in just over 3 years, the state has sold a whopping $1,163,561,140 in cannabis.
The state tax coffers have also seen an injection of monies from the sale of marijuana, totaling up $196,398,752. Figures in both cases are for the time period of January 2022 to August of 2025.

New Figures from the Montana Department of Revenue of Monthly Sales
In new figures available from the Department of Revenue in Montana, Yellowstone County, home to the state's largest city Billings, leads in sales of cannabis. For the month of August, Yellowstone had combined sales of medical and recreational marijuana at $4,888,756.

As with past months and years, Gallatin County continues to follow closely behind, with the Bozeman area county racking up $4,672,719 in combined sales for August. Data released shows a sharp drop off to the third leading county; Missoula County has sold $3,436,068 in recreational and medical marijuana.
Where Does Cascade County Fall for Sales in August 2025?
For residents in Cascade County, figures are considerably lower than those of the top 3. Around Great Falls, sales of cannabis for August were $1,944,749 total. Nearly all of that figure is from recreational sales in the county, showing $1,712,417 on the books for August. Sales of medical marijuana were much lower at just $232,332.
In comparative sales from year to year, Montana saw a slight increase from this same time last year. Sales in August of 2024 in the state were $29,716,881 for medical and recreational use.
