It is full steam ahead for hunters in Montana at just over the midway point of the general rifle hunting season. That means just two weeks left for those that haven't pulled the trigger yet to fill up the freezer for the winter months.
In Central Montana, hunters have been reporting into the Augusta check station with average numbers according to the Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks Region 4 reporting data. Hunter numbers are down, but taken game is remaining steady so far in 2025.

Average Results for Central Montana Hunters So Far
MFWP reports that as of Sunday November 16, 2025, "1,730 hunters have come through FWP’s Augusta check station which is slightly below recent average but six percent higher than last year at this point of the season."

Success rates in Central Montana remains near average with 22 percent of hunters reporting they have harvested an animal so far. However, MFWP says that "a total of 385 deer and elk have come through the station, which is 3 percent below the ten-year average and 11 percent below last year at this time."
Elk Hunters Struggling Finding Game, Deer Hunters Seeing Some Success
After 3 weeks, elk hunters in Montana are having a hard time bringing home game. MFWP says that so far, a total of 94 elk has been checked thus far this season, down from the ten-year average of 145 elk. That means the elk harvest has now dropped to 36 percent below average.
Deer hunters are not having as much trouble this season, with reports of the total deer harvest "remaining above the ten-year average and similar to overall deer harvest at this time last year, with just under 300 deer checked so far this season." Montana's general big game rifle season ends November 30, 2025.
