Several States Ban The Purchase Of Treats With SNAP Benefits

Nebraska, Utah, Idaho, Indiana and Iowa have passed legislation to ban the purchase of foods deemed unhealthy by the government with SNAP benefits.

The items banned include candy and sugary soda and fruit drinks. In theory, not a bad idea. The healthier the food available in the home, the healthier the people living in the home. Right? In theory, it's a decent idea.

How long before they figure out how much sugar is in fruits? Just sayin'.

Montana went back and forth about this very topic this year in Helena. It was introduced by a Republican in February and died on the floor in May of this year.

Here's Why I Feel Gross About This Ban

There are already plenty of things that are not paid for with SNAP benefits like pre-made food, paper products, medicines, anything that isn't food isn't paid for. Fair enough.

How come we keep taking away "the little things" from little kids and the elderly? I firmly believe the little things in life can literally save your life by giving you a brief moment of joy. Candy is like that. Your favorite soda can make your DAY in the right moment. And why in the world would we take cake and ice cream away from birthdays?

You're saying, no, it's premade cakes taken away. The parents can MAKE a cake for the kid.

Listen, you can't give that mom one damn second of a break one damn day of the year? We are a miserable bunch sometimes in America. Doling out joy like it should be earned, not given.

I will say this one time:

Children have no say in how they live. No matter WHAT you try and do, someone will abuse it. So. What. Doing the right thing is almost never easy.

I'm so glad this failed this year in Montana. Thing is, how much longer will the poor be able to have even the smallest nice thing like a candy bar?

Elections matter.
