Montana Farmers React To New $12 Billion Federal Aid Package

On Monday, farmers across America, including here in Montana, received some welcome news as the Trump administration announced a new $12 billion farm-aid package.

But not every agricultural industry is celebrating. Some remain skeptical about whether the bailout will actually make a difference.

Administration Says Aid Targets Market Disruptions and Inflation

It’s been a challenging year for farmers, marked by falling crop prices, tariffs, and an increasingly uncertain foreign market.

According to administration officials, the aid package is intended to support those affected by “market disruptions, elevated input costs, persistent inflation, and losses from unfair trade practices.”

Details are still limited on how the funds will be distributed, but the president of the Montana Farmers Union is already expressing concern.

Montana Farmers Union Voice Concerns

Walter Schweitzer, president of the Montana Farmers Union, told the Montana Free Press that many of the issues farmers face “today are almost wholly caused by tariffs.” He added:

"This ‘bridge’ gets us to the middle of the river. We not only need to build a bridge across the river, but we need to build a road beyond. We’re going to have to spend a lot of money to incentivize customers to come back to us when this is all over."

A recent study from the Center for Strategic and International Studies found that U.S. agricultural exports to China have dropped by 73%, leading to more than $6.8 billion in losses since January.
