Tonight, in opening Snapchat to reply to friends... a NEW friend appeared on my feed (without my permission) called "My AI". A blue-skinned, purple-haired "friend", who Snapchat has created. (Note: If you have blue skin and purple hair... first, you should see a doctor about the blue skin. Second, purple IS my favorite color... and I feel like Snapchat knew this...)

What the heck is "My AI"?!?

According to Snapchat, My AI is an...

...experimental, friendly, chatbot currently available to Snapchatters.

Interesting. Snapchat lets users know their fancy new *FORCED UPON YOU* AI can:

  • Answer a burning trivia question (OH BOY)
  • Offer advice on the perfect gift for your BFF's birthday
  • Help plan a hiking trip for a long weekend
  • Or, suggest what to make for dinner

Well, isn't that special?

Also, you can give your own personal AI the gift of a NAME, all the while you tell it all your likes and dislikes. (I wonder if Snapchat will buy me a gift card to Candy Town USA for Tootsie Roll Frooties...)

Immediately when I opened the conversation, here's what I was greeted with.

No, I don't think I need help.

DISCLAIMERS, because Snapchat is no different

Now, before you go off thinking this new AI friend of yours knows everything, Snapchat is quick to bring you back down to reality:

We’re constantly working to improve and evolve My AI, but it’s possible My AI’s responses may include biased, incorrect, harmful, or misleading content. Because My AI is an evolving feature, you should always independently check answers provided by My AI before relying on any advice, and you should not share confidential or sensitive information.

This AI is powered by the Skynet-esque AI, ChatGPT, "with additional attributes and safety controls unique to Snapchat". Uh-huh, sure. We've all seen how well these experiments have been going. Though, those were at your own discretion to use.

My BIG beef

YOU CANNOT TURN THIS THING OFF, UNFRIEND IT, OR BLOCK IT. It's here, for good. You CAN delete any data sent through it, but that is it. So... keep an eyeball on what this new "friend" on Snapchat might be saying to your kids.
