Phone Scammers Use Spoofed Area Codes
Scammers are always looking for new ways to trick people, and one of their oldest tricks is still one of their most effective: spoofing phone numbers.
They'll make it look like the call is coming from a familiar area code, possibly even from Montana, even though the person on the other end could be calling from somewhere completely different.
The good news is there are people keeping track of these scams, and they've noticed a pattern.
The Area Codes Most Commonly Linked To Scam Calls
It turns out scammers tend to reuse the same area codes over and over again. Now, that doesn't mean every call from one of these area codes is a scam. Plenty of legitimate people live there too. But if you don't know anyone from one of these places, it's probably worth letting the call go to voicemail first.
Of course, scammers aren't limiting themselves to just one or two area codes. They use several, and that's why it's worth knowing which area codes are most commonly linked to scam calls.
Take a minute to scroll through the gallery below and make a mental note of them. The next time your phone lights up with an unfamiliar number, that little bit of knowledge might be enough to keep you from becoming their next target.
