Self Checkout Has Always Divided Shoppers
Self checkout has always been a hot topic, and it’s pretty much split shoppers into two camps.
On one side are the people who actually like scanning and bagging their own groceries. For them, it’s faster, there’s no awkward small talk, and you can get in and out quickly.
On the other side are shoppers who think it’s ridiculous to do what feels like unpaid work for a multi billion-dollar company. And let’s be honest, when something goes wrong, you still end up needing an employee anyway.
Now, Walmart appears to be shifting direction when it comes to self checkout lanes, and they could start disappearing as early as next year.
Theft Is A Major Factor In The Decision
One of the biggest reasons behind the change is theft. It’s been easy for people to scan cheaper items, or in some cases, walk out without paying, claiming they used self-checkout.
Should Walmart Bring Back Traditional Checkout Lines
After the removal of self-checkout kiosks at one Walmart in Missouri, reports indicated that calls to local police were reduced by half.
What are your thoughts on this change? Are you a fan of self checkout and want it to stick around, or are you excited to stop doing “unpaid work” at the grocery store?
