What Is The Oldest Brewery In Montana?

While the popularity of craft beers didn't really take off until the 2000s, here in Montana, the oldest brewery in the state first opened up in 1987.

Bayern Brewing, located in Missoula, was started by Trudy Schulte, who was from Bavaria, and at it's inception it was a bar, restaurant, and brewery.

Trudy sold it in 1991, and it has since been owned by Jürgen Knöller, who is not only the owner but also their Masterbrewer.

What Is The Largest Brewery In Montana?

While Bayern might be the oldest brewery in the state, the title for largest brewery in Montana goes to Big Sky Brewing Co.

First opened in 1995 by Bjorn Nabozney, Neal Leathers, and Brad Robinson, it is also located in Missoula and continues to be owned by them today.

It originally started as just a draft-only brewery, meaning their beer wasn't bottled or canned; it was sold only on location, but is now available in over 24 different states.

So, does being the oldest or biggest brewery in Montana also mean being the highest rated? Find out in the gallery below.

LOOK: Best Beers From Every State

To find the best beer in each state and Washington D.C., Stacker analyzed January 2020 data from BeerAdvocate, a website that gathers user scores for beer in real-time. BeerAdvocate makes its determinations by compiling consumer ratings for all 50 states and Washington D.C. and applying a weighted rank to each. The weighted rank pulls the beer toward the list's average based on the number of ratings it has and aims to allow lesser-known beers to increase in rank. Only beers with at least 10 rankings to be considered; we took it a step further to only include beers with at least 100 user rankings in our gallery. Keep reading to find out what the best beer is in each of the 50 states and Washington D.C.
