Can You Buy and or Own A Tank In Montana?

Imagine owning a tank, a real decommissioned, standard issue tank that drives, commanding any and every terrain you can see. I asked my younger brothers when we were kids what one would buy FIRST if they had won the lottery.

They always said a tank.

One can imagine having a great time with your buddies driving around in a field taking turns flipping brodies and crushing stuff.

Which begs the question.

Can a civilian buy and own a tank in Montana or The United States?

After some digging, I found some information that is quite interesting.

According to an article from Backfire, It's totally legal to buy and own a full sized decommissioned tank. In fact it's legal in The United States, The United Kingdom and Russia. That last fact is important because one can buy a tank from another country selling them.

However, tanks are not cheap.

According to the same article, old, unusable tanks can cost at a minimum of 50,000 to 100,000 dollar. I say "at a minimum" because 50 to 100,000 dollars is on the cheap side of things. Over all, it's still pretty cheap considering new tanks cost upwards of 6 million dollars.

Where can I drive a tank?

Let's say you have actually purchased a tank and had it delivered to your driveway.

Cool.

Before you turn the keys, make sure you follow city and state laws to where those types of vehicles are permitted because I'm sure you will get stopped by law enforcement if you decide to drive it to the store for a gallon of milk.

Tanks are heavy and gigantic and may not be rated for certain roads as they may be too heavy.

With that, follow all other laws if you happen to be a luck individual to buy a tank.
