The Disappearance Of Mark Smith
Mark Smith was just 19 years old when he packed up his belongings and set out to travel the world.
Sadly, that was the last time his family and friends ever saw him, and for decades they were left wondering what happened.
This week, there was finally an update. KTVQ is reporting the Oregon State Police shared on social media that skeletal remains discovered back in 1978 have now been identified.
Discovery Of Remains In Oregon In 1978
Those remains were found on May 9, 1978, when loggers in Williams, Oregon, about an hour and a half from the California border, came across partial skeletal remains. For years, the case went unsolved.
In 2020, the remains were sent to the University of North Texas for DNA testing and analysis. Investigators were able to confirm the remains belonged to a male, which helped reopen the case. After years of work, officials were finally able to confirm the identity on February 26, 2026.
Family Receives Long Awaited Closure
When Oregon State Police contacted Mark’s family, they shared that he had never been far from their thoughts all these years. They are now asking for privacy as they process the news, which is completely understandable.
There are still unanswered questions about what exactly happened, but after half a century, the family finally has some long-awaited closure.
