Montanans Warned About New Passport Scam Ahead of Real ID Deadline

With the Real ID deadline of May 7th fast approaching, plenty of people in Montana are looking to get their passports updated.

Of course, whenever people are required to do something, scammers will find a way to screw people over.

Why That "Fast Passport" Offer Is Likely a Scam

Having your passport is one of the easier ways to make sure that when you travel, you're not going to run into security issues.

If you've never gotten a passport before, one thing that can surprise you is how long it can take for you to get your passport in the mail.

Due to that long wait time, scammers are out in force promising they can get your passport to you in as little as six to eight weeks, and it'll only cost you $119. So then how does this scam work?

How to Avoid Getting Scammed Before the Real ID Deadline

According to KHOU, a news station based out of Houston, Texas, the scammers will take your Social Security number, date of birth, and address.

So far it doesn't seem that bad, until you realize there is only one place to get your passport, and now that scammer has all your information for future identity theft, along with your $119.

Be safe and remember that the only place to begin your application process and get your passport is through the official U.S. government website, which you can find by clicking here.
