Why Montana’s Lakes Deserve More National Love

Montana residents have long known that our home is "The Last Best Place," but it always seemed we were overlooked.

That perception is changing, as more and more Montana locations are appearing on "best of" lists, and now we find ourselves at the very top of one.

Best Montana Lakes

Lakes are not usually the first thing people associate with Montana, but we've got loads of amazing lakes to brag about.

Glacier National Park has plenty of lakes inside it, but perhaps the most well-known one would be Avalanche Lake.

One of the clearest lakes in America is also found right here under the Big Sky, and that would be Lake McDonald.

While those lakes are very popular, they aren't the lake town that Travel and Leisure claims to be the best place for solo travelers to journey to.

Underrated Montana Lakes Locals Love

That would be Bigfork, and here's their reason for picking this town:

Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. Along the 185-mile shoreline, the town of Bigfork has old Western resort energy reminiscent of ski towns in Colorado mining country. The town has a growing arts scene—with an impressive array of galleries, a notable theater presence, and a Festival of the Arts every August—and it's known for great hiking, with many trails offering unique views of the water. Rent a house right on the lakeshore or book a cabin at the all-inclusive Flathead Lake Lodge for a memorable dude ranch experience.
