How One Montana Town Became a National Boomtown

As much as we try to fight it, Montana has been discovered.

We might have been "The Last Best Place" (and still are, in my opinion), but now people know about us, and that's made one Montana town among the fastest-growing towns in America.

Population Surge: Why More People Are Choosing to Call Montana Home

I've written countless articles here, here, and here about the growth that Montana has seen since the pandemic.

Depending on when you start tracking the population growth, you'll get different answers as to what towns are the fastest growing.

GoBankingRates went back a full decade, however, to find the latest town deemed "fastest" growing in Montana, and I doubt you'll be surprised by what they found.

Montana Growth: What a Decade of Change Looks Like

By looking at towns and cities with a population ranging between 25,000 and 500,000, that eliminated a majority of towns to choose from here in Montana.

Still in a shocking twist that EVERYONE saw coming, Bozeman is considered the fastest growing boomtown in Montana.

Since 2014, Bozeman has seen an almost 27% increase in population.

  • Change in population since 2014: 14,377 (26.9%)
    • Population: 53,500
  • Change in per-capita income: 41.5%
    • Per-capita income: $45,037
  • Change in occupied housing units: 5,968 (27.1%)
  • Change in owner-occupied housing units: 2,322 (24.1%)

I know people like to complain about Bozeman becoming "BozAngeles," but there is a reason Bozeman has grown so quickly.

They constantly rank high when it comes to schools, according to Niche.

Along with those great schools they've got good healthcare, plus a strong economy, also they're close to Yellowstone National Park, and plenty of access to other outdoor activities, just to name a few reasons.

For new residents, however, there is a little bit you should know about what you can expect when moving to Montana.
