What is often overlooked is the issue of people LEAVING Montana and the towns that are experiencing population decline.

Montana's population has been growing these last few years, and not by just a little bit either.
Since the 2020 Census, Montana has seen its population grow by 4.9%, bringing our population (as of July 2024) to 1,137,233.
Still, while some cities under the Big Sky have seen lots of growth, other cities have seen their population decrease, some by as much 10%, if you can believe it.
These 7 Montana Towns Are Shrinking Fast
A website out of Texas, named Agadari, took a look at census data to find what towns in Montana were losing the most residents.
One observation they made, which many Montana residents could have easily noted without needing data, is that eastern Montana is experiencing a decline in population, while western Montana is seeing an increase in its population.
It's not entirely straightforward, however, as even in western Montana, communities that relied on logging or mining are facing challenges similar to those of their eastern counterparts.
