Costco is just like any other subscription service, they have to look after their bottom line.

According to a recent Business Insider report Costco is looking to mimic Netflix and crack down on people who are sharing memberships.

Turns out that if you have a membership and use the self check out line, you could get away without showing your ID.

A Costco spokesperson told Business Insider

We don't feel it's right that non members receive the same benefits and pricing as our members

Costco to add ID checkers

Pretty soon when you shop at Costco don't be surprise when they start asking for you to show ID when you have used the self check out line.

The Costco spokesperson also told Business Insider

As we already ask for the membership card at checkout, we are now asking to see their membership card with their photo at our self-service checkout registers.

In a state like Montana that could sting. We don't have a lot of Costco locations to shop at.

There are I'm sure times people who don't live in those town, but are members, have given someone traveling there their membership card to pick them up something.

Thanks to more people sharing membership cards Costco might also have to raise membership fees by $5 this fall.
